One Fell Swoop by Patrick Dougherty

Watch the evolution and construction of Patrick Dougherty's site-specific installation at Chatfield Farms.

This art installation was created by weaving saplings and branches, including willows (Salix spp.) gathered from Chatfield Farms. Designed specifically for this location, the sculpture was constructed over the course of three weeks with the help of over 150 staff and volunteers.

Dougherty earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina and a master’s in hospital and health administration from the University of Iowa. Later, he returned to the University of North Carolina to study art history and sculpture. Dougherty has created more than 250 of his critically acclaimed woven sapling installations which have been exhibited at museums, botanic gardens and outdoor spaces across the globe.
